Filibuster Reform is Needed Now |
|
Some call it filibustering, others see it as obstructionism, but both parties have long twisted the Constitution to fit their partisan games to block the other one’s goals, like the stratagems of some TV reality show! For the past four years Democrats have used a non-constitutional rule requiring a “super-majority” to approve presidential nominees to the federal bench. Even Ted Kennedy acknowledged back in 1975, when the shoe was on the “other foot,” that "the filibuster rule is not enshrined in the Constitution” and it was "a rule that was made by the Senate, and it is a rule that can be unmade by the Senate." Even California's Dianne Feinstein has acknowledged that filibuster abuse is not "the honest thing to do." Of course, that was back in 1999, when Bill Clinton was in the White House and she believed that "it is our job to confirm these nominees. If we don't like them, we can vote against them." Filibuster reform must take place now to remove this “gamesmanship” from our national lawmaking! The Senate has a constitutional role of giving “advice and consent.” If one group of political robots does not like a nominee, let them vote against them! But do not deny the nominees the right to be voted on by playing games. We must take a stand for filibuster reform. Let your senators know you are tired of their “partisan gamesmanship!” Urge them to restore the Senate tradition to a simple 51-vote majority to confirm judicial nominees. Then let the Senate join together in a true “democratic” VOTE of yes or no. As Senator Feinstein has said, it is “the honest thing to do.” |
