Give Up Religion or Stay Out of Politics?

Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, recently told the Christian Science Monitor that "The religious community has to decide whether they want to be tax exempt or involved in politics."

His statement is the latest in a series of negative comments that is taken as a threat by “values voters.” We have to wonder if Dean’s attempt to muzzle ministers and others from speaking out on important issues facing our society would apply to the Reverends Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton--or just to conservative Christians?

Comments such as these place Dean and the Democratic Party in jeopardy of further alienating religious voters. Do we have to remind Mr. Dean that under his anti-religious-freedom rules, pastors, priests, and rabbis wouldn't have been able to mobilize people of faith to join the civil rights marches in Selma and Montgomery?

Sorry, Mr. Dean, but KTLW will continue to speak out as proudly pro-life, pro-family and pro-religious liberty.
