It's become clear (over the year just past) that economic distress has not increased Americans' desire for big government spending programs. Polls continue to show that voters are recoiling against the $787 billion stimulus package, the narrowly-passed, Democratic health-care bills and the (trillions of dollars) “cap-and-trade” tax-bill that's stalled in the Senate. Clearly, with unemployment hovering at 10% nationwide (and 20% in some areas), these unprecedented and expensive social actions have not worked and American tax-payers don't like the smell of crony capitalism, bailout favoritism and earmark corruption.
Public policies, behavioral norms and societal expectations used to reflect the positive factors of a society built on the ethic of “reciprocity,” treating others as you would want to be treated. Perhaps we all need to re-read Jesus’ Sermon On The Mount (in Matthew 5, 6 and 7) and seek to practice it’s principles, in order to enjoy a Happy New Year!
