Scandal-Plagued Governor Stepping Down

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has resigned after being linked to a prostitution ring, where he may have spent as much as $80,000.

With his wife, Silda, by his side, Spitzer said "In the past few days I've begun to atone for my public failings. I cannot allow for my private failings to disrupt the people's work." Then, drawing from Luke 12:48, he said "To those of whom much is given, much is expected. I have been given much ... I'm deeply sorry that I did not live up to that."

There is no mention, in the mainstream media, that Spitzer not only betrayed public trust, but his marriage vows as well, as he engaged in illegal and immoral behavior. Instead, there is a degree of sympathy for Mr. Spitzer's embarrassment at being caught and exposed.

This scandal ought to prompt all of us—politicians and “other sinners” alike—to use this Lenten season to examine ourselves and seek God’s forgiveness and cleansing!
