The Case for Marriage

California Senate Bill 1066 would allow cohabitating men and women to receive every marriage right and benefit that married couples receive under California law.

We see this as bad public policy and urge Californians to call their state senator, state assembly-member and Gov. Schwarzenegger to urge the defeat of SB 1066. This bill promotes cohabitation and ignores social science studies proving married people are happier, healthier, and better off financially.

Half of all cohabitating unions end within a year and 90 percent within five years. Where “serial cohabitation” has emerged as the unhappy norm, there are high rates of physical aggression, more child abuse, and less sexual fidelity. In contrast, over 57% of married relationships last 20 years or longer!

Marriage is more healthy, secure and long-lasting for men, women, and the children they often produce.
