No More Late Show for Me
I used to frequently stay up after the news to hear the meandering monologs of David Letterman. Often, I would be enticed to continue watching to hear his Top 10 List or see him drop watermelons on New York’s 53rd Street. But, in recent years, I grew uncomfortable with his demeaning political-sarcasm, particularly as he nightly made President Bush look like a buffoon, with selected screenings and malicious editing. Others suffered the same. It became so strident and partisan that I wondered if it actually affected the ultimate election of Barack Obama. Now, many months later, the 62-year-old Letterman lewdly joked that Sarah Palin’s daughter had been sexually assaulted by a Yankees’ player. When Governor Palin called his remarks “perverted” he contended it was “just a joke,” but acknowledged it may have been “inappropriate.” The Holy Spirit began to convict me, by reminding me of other “inappropriate” material I had allowed David Letterman to pour into my mind, Late, before I went to bed. Philippians 4:8 urges us to fill our minds with things that are “true…noble…right…pure…lovely…admirable… excellent…and praiseworthy.” Sorry, “Dav-id,” but—since your Late Show’s sarcasm and sick jokes do not fit in that list—I have determined your program is not permissible* for me to watch. “Good night, Mr. Letterman!” * See I Corinthians 6:12: “Everything is permissible for me”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”—but I will not be mastered by anything.
